John Deere M Keeps dying?

Looking at buying a John Deere M. Guys says it will start up but dies after a couple minutes, but will start back up. I'm thinking carb float sticking or water in fuel. Any other things I should look for right off the bat?

Check for debris/trash in the bottom of the gas tank.

Check and clean the screen on the sediment bowl.

Check and clean the fuel line between the sediment bowl and carburetor.

Hope this helps.

The first thing you should do is what almost no one does. Determine if it is spark or fuel. Hook up a timing light, tape the trigger down and fire it up. If that light
stops flashing when it dies it's electrical and if it doesn't it's fuel. Can't get any simpler than that. BTW - If it's still 6 volts and all you have is a 12v timing
light just pull the mower up to it and use it's battery or your truck for the power source.

Don't over look the condenser, & ( If Timing lite doesn't flash while cranking the engine, you have NO SPARK. )

You might want to invest in a battery operated timing light from Summit Racing. Mine works great and I don't have to worry about an outside power source. It is powered by one "D" cell battery. Two slide buttons on the shell, one for timing and one for flashlight. Only one lead and that goes to No. 1 plug. I have used it on my JD L and 8N Ford.

The timing light will continue to flash as long as the engine is turning IF there is a spark. Doesn't matter if it's actually still running or coasting down cause she died. A glance at the light before she completely stops turning will eliminate either spark or fuel every time. There is no guessing which way to go.
