Was working on this 80 again yesterday and got around to checking the electrical system on the Pony and thought I'd share some photos..

Wow, that is nasty. I would be very concerned what the inside of that cranking engine looks like. I would certainly take a look before you try to start it. I would buy a complete new distributor and replace that thing.

Going back to your first post, you said your wife bought the 80 for you site unseen. Well that lady is a keeper but I assume you know that. The 80 is a great tractor and well worth your time and effort to fix it up.

The pony on the 80 is a lot easier to get at for repairs than some of the row crop tractors .

Wow that distributor looks horrible!

To make you feel better, here is my 80 at the moment

Dan, Yes, I started checking into it (the Pony) yesterday. It's free, but pretty sludged up. Same with the main engine and transmission/rear end. It most likely had been jumped with 12 volts as the starter didn't want to spin when I tried it. Took it off and it had solder drip out of it from being too hot at one time. The solder on the main lug to the copper leads inside was gone, so I got that re-soldered last night and tested it on the floor with battery cables a few times and it worked, so put it on and it spins the pony with the plugs really well. Have the pony crankcase full of diesel right now soaking. It's going to be a few days until the coil kit gets here, so I'm going to let it soak and spin it with the starter a few times. Yes- the wife is a keeper for sure! Had been looking for an 80 as I've got a 40, 50, 60, 70G and 70D and wanted an 80 to round out the collection and couldn't find one anywhere. Have a picture out of a calendar in the shop of one and always looked at it and called it the [b:ced03d0c79]"Elusive 80"[/b:ced03d0c79] as I figured I'd never find one with only 3400+/_ built, and out of the blue, the wife tells me she had found this one in Colorado and it was on it's way here! Shocked to say the least when she told me that.

Brandon,
Wow. I hope I don't have to get my platform off of mine in the near future. That looks like a full days' work to pull that with the dash and fuel tank. Transmission issues on yours? Thanks for the photo. It shows the hydraulic ports. On mine, the hack that had it took a torch to the outer Powr-Trol handle and whacked it off at the pivot as he didn't have/didn't use the other set of hydraulics and just left the plugs in. I couldn't tell where the ports were from the reproduction manual I got very well, but your photo helped a lot. I found out they just had about 2" of grease/filth covering them and after I got that cleaned off I could see the plugs. Who cuts a handle off with a torch just because you aren't using it? Now I have to fabricate one of them the best I can to make a replacement.

You could say I've been into the transmission. Here it is from the beginning

Brandon,

You've been working on that for 10 years? I looked at your photos and they are time stamped in 2006. Is that correct? A lot of chipped teeth in those pictures. Hope you get parts and get it running again. Looks like a very nice tractor.

Yep, been working on it since 2006. Not the whole time though. It's been together and running in the meantime, and then I finally got the time and space to get into splitting the tractor to get at the differential. I wanted to the first time around but it was just not doable at the time. I'm not exactly a mechanic at NASCAR, I'm pretty slow paced.

So far I've rebuilt the pony, the powersteering, the PTO, the pony again (ugh). A couple rod bearings. And now the whole transmission. Other things I'm sure. Losing track....

Oh hydraulic pump and the control box.

Worked hard and put away wet is an understatement. Most of these things had been torn apart and updated BEFORE I got to them.
