John Deere 4000 Hp

I'm buying a John Deere 4000. Things that I wanted checked out on it is the hydraulic system and pressure. The brakes and the HP (horse power). The seller got back to me and said the brakes checked out okay. The hydraulic pressure is good. He said the horse power was at 85hp. He advertised it as 97 HP. Not sure if that is good and average for a 1972 John Deere 4000 with just a little over 5000 hrs on it. Should I be concerned about the HP?

Was the measurement taken at wide open throttle (2200 RPM) or at PTO speed (1900 RPM)? A Power Shift transmission would rob some power. Gasoline and propane engines had flatter torque curves than the diesel engine and lower HP at PTO speed. The Nebraska Tractor Test for that specific model (engine and transmission) will show what they tested at various RPMs. The owner's manual might also list those test results.

5000 hours would be low and H.P. can vary on different dynos. Most stock 1972 4020 with pump untouched ran around 95 some lower but by working on pump 100/110H.P. was normal. There weren't much different if any from steering wheel forward.72 4000s sell about same as 2520s to 4320s unless they are powershift.

Thank you Larry, found out that this tractor has sat for a few years.
Needs to be worked hard and then I'll have my neighbor test it.
