So after messing with an thinking a lot about this I have the first one back in. But had to come back in to look at the manual to see how many balls go where and the I-T manual again seems vague.
First off what I did was took a piece of 3/4 inch pipe and made a tool to hold the ball in place and down while I pushed the shift rail back into place.

That is the 1st and 5th , 2nd and 6th rail. The I-T manual shows 5 interlock balls between the rail I have in and the 3rd and 7th and 4th and 8th rail but I do not think I pulled that many out. Also shows towards the rear of the tractor 2 more balls but again I did not have any come out there.
Tech 7 I can still use those pages please.

But at least I am going forward on this thing after much thought as to how to get there

Hey Old my wife did a bunch of work scanning the pages and "test e-mailing" them to me at the shop this am. She came by at noon and checked out how they came through. She said she was going home to send them to you, will have to check with her when I get home.

Well if I am reading the I-T manual correctly when I install the next shiftier rail which is the right inner one I will have 3 detent balls and 3 interlock ball to get in place and hold to install the next one.
Buying that piece of 3/4 inch thin wall pipe and then beveling the one end of it sure did work nice for the right outer shift rail and holding the detent ball down as I slipped it in.

As for burning the I-T manual it is owned by the guy who owns the tractor so nope not going to do that LOL

So if I am reading the I-T manual correctly there is a total of 5 interlock balls (1/4) 3 go on the right hand side shiftier rails and 2 on the left side shiftier rails. Correct??
Then there are a total of 6 detent balls. 4 go on the right hand side shiftier rails and 2 on the left hand side. Correct??

Old, sounds like you got in over your head on the get go. I would throw IT manuals in the fire. Get an official john deere manual and study before going any future....you may get it back together and then have to take it all apart again. I think Benjamin Franklin or maybe Will Rogers said you get all your experience right after you needed it.

Ya the I-T manual is not clear on that but the page Tech 7 sent me is so that was a big help as to what and where the balls went. I should not have any more major problems with the other 3 rails now other then the pain if getting the detent ball to push down while sliding in the rail.

I would not call it in over my head I would call it more like due to lack of good info I got into something that I had to sit back and think out and find more info on. But I am one who enjoys learning new things and doing things that I have never done before.

I got into that last summer with an IH 656 and having to replace the ring and pinion gear on it and I had to extend the over head I-Beam I have in my shop by almost 8 foot to be able to split that tractor

Also the page from the manual that Tech 7 sent me explains how all the interlock balls and detent balls work so that made it clear as to how and what etc. Both the I-T manual and the JD page for his manual show the same picture just the I-T manual leaves out a few lines of info
