Hello. Have 1951 B and removed transmission cover to just do visual inspection of shift forks and gears. My question is when I put cover with gear shift back on do I not leave all shifters where they are on shafts. I took it out in neutral and assuming the neutral position is locates in piece that looks like horseshoe. Any help is greatly appreciated. Bought manual from jensales and is very in depth on most areas, but very vague concerning this.

I find it easiest to set the transmission in 4th gear & then I place the shifter lever also in 4th. This is handy on the B because the lever is almost perfectly straight up & down when in 4th making everything easy to line up & drop into place. I usually wedge a small block of wood into the 4th gear gate so the lever stays fully in the 4th position.

To be in 4th the range shifter (the tall one) is to the left and the rear most shifter is to the right. That leaves one hole for the bottom end ball of the shifter to slide straight down into.

Hope that helps.

Read your question again & realize I made no mention of your question about the "horse shoe like" shifter. That is the range shifter. It is taller than all the others, farthest forward and it is moved by the upper ball on the gearshift stick. It only engages with the shifter lever when you're in the "crossover gate" crossing from the 1, 2, 4 and R side over to the 3, 5, and 6 side of the gear shift pattern. I find it harder to line all the parts up when it's in neutral than when it's in 4th. See my other post. First time I put one back on a B, I pondered how to make this easy & I cut the heads off of two 6"x3/8" bolts putting them in two bolt holes to act as dowel pins or guides. About half way through I realized putting it into 4th & moving the lever to 4th as well made it real easy. I tossed those bolts back in the tool box for another day & another project.
