WILL THIS FRONT AXLE FIT A JD MODEL M?

Perhaps someone who has an M can help to confirm whither or not the axle I have will work on a Model M. Sorry, but I don?t know for sure which way is up on the axle center tube, nor which is the front or back.

The axle center tube is 3 3/8? OD and 2 7/8? ID. The 5/8? holes for the pins that go through the knee tubes are 22 1/4? apart, on centers. The pivot tube bushings are 1? ID and the pivot tube is 10" long, with 1/2? sticking through the axle center tube on one side, 6? on the other. (Note that I have 1/8? discrepancy in the length of the axle pivot tube: 3 3/8? + 1/2? + 6? and this does not equal 10? but 10? is the best measurement - hard measurements to get!) The pivot tube is offset from center where it goes cross-ways through the axle center tube, being 1/2? further from the top or bottom side of the axle center tube to which the braces are welded than to the top or bottom side without the braces.

As for the knees, the knee height is 11", center of axle center tube to center of the axle wheel spindle. Tread width adjusting holes are located 10?, 11? , 12?, 15?, 16 1/2? and 17 1/2? from the outer face of the wheel hub.

In rough numbers, not being able to actually mount it up to a tractor and put wheels on, it looks to me like this axle would provide tread widths ranging form about 40? to 55?. Further it looks to me like the center of the pivot pin would be about 22? (plus or minus the afore mentioned 1/2?) above the ground with standard 4X15 front tires.

Any way to post a pic? An early M will have a 13/16 pivot shaft. Can't remember the later size but it's bigger. Too late to do any measuring tonight.

Well I can't answer on the M question but I can say it is not for a L or LA which could/would be the next size smaller tractor that might fit.

Looks like a late M and early 40. To use it on an earlier M you would neeed to change the pivot bushings to a 13/16 id. One of my 49's has the same front end bushed for the smaller shaft.
