This 1020 sure is a pain.

Okay so I was going to put the shiftier rails back in but. So far I have not found a way to hold the detent ball in so that the first rail can be installed. So figured well remove the little freeze plug and then the ball and spring can be put in after the rail is in but no that will not work because well there is a roll pin in the way. So now what??
Thanks if you have any idea of how to beat this one

Any chance you can make a dummy shaft out of a short piece of round stock to hold them back and then have room to get the shaft in so it can push it out of the way as you go in ?

I have been thinking about something like that but the shiftier rail has a V shape at the end so to do that I would have to drill out a V in the end of the dummy.
If there was an east way to pull the roll pin that would work the best but that will not be easy either.
Guess I will have to think about it some more. That is what I had to do to figure out how to do the counter shaft and after using guide bolts the count shaft went in but it still was not an easy thing to do

I use the taper on the end of the rail to push the ball into the hole against the spring. Use the large end of a punch to help get the ball lined up.

At this time the biggest problem is just getting the ball to stay on the end of the spring so I can then use a punch or other such thing to hold it. I will have to think this out a bit more I guess.

Old, I can't exactly visualize what you're doing but I guarantee there is an easy way to do it....the company may had had a tool or sorts but you could make a dummy as mentioned before and run the other shaft up against it making the ball jump to the other shaft...the old 2 cylinders had a pin and you used a cotter key to hold before finally releasing the pressure...I was helped a lot by an older JD mechanic since passed and he showed me more tips and tricks...made most everything seem easy....you can work your self into frustration if not high blood pressure....do you have a shop manual...this is a good key....

It's been too many yrs since I was a JD dealer service manager and I don't remember the correct procedure for reinstalling shift rail detent balls nor do I have access to a JD utility tractor TM.

That is exactly why it's been discussed many times on this & other forums that acquiring & reading JD tech manuals is so important as these JD manuals have a wealth of information.

I&T manuals are better than no tech manual but IMHO are better served as a bug killer.

ok, I looked at the parts manual...you have the plug out...wouldn't that pin drive out of the way...not sure if it would go into case...put your shifter on rail insert then put the ball and spring use something to push the spring in after in place then drive another pin to hold the spring put the cap back in. The roll pin holds the spring in place against ball and shaft...you'll need a good flat punch but that pin has to move out of the way....

X 2 - Yes they are expensive but a JD tech manual would have already saved way more than it's cost. In my opinion an IT manual and a NG tractor just isn't a good combination. IT's have their place but going deep in to a NG isn't one of them.

I agree repairing a New generation tractor especially if it happens be hydraulic related is much more complicated than some older models such as a JD 2 cyl or Ford 8N.

I have used an old shaft cut off installed it from the center of transmission while shoving the balls in place Then come through with proper shaft the other way.

Old the spring and ball CAN NOT be installed after the shifter rail is installed in the case. put the spring in the case and then use sticky grease to hold the ball on the spring. Then with the shifter rails in the correct position you can easily hold the ball back in the hole with a punch reaching in from the opposite end from were your installing the shifter rail.

Old you really need to get to look at a JD tech manual on this. It is explained in much better detail than the IT manuals. I have not done a JD 1020 in years but I have done several JD 2020s in the last few years and I did not have any major issues. Your doing some thing out of order for it to be going so hard.

Old; I have the page from a JD 1020 manual here detailing the install of the shifter shafts. I will try to get my wife to scan them and post them here or e-mail it to you later today. Are there more pages you might need?

Well unless there are a number of got yous as for getting it back together all I would need is the shiftier rial install info.
Once I have this area put back together I then have to split it to do a clutch then open up the engine to find the coolant leak. So unless they have made that stuff hard to get done the sift rail info should be all I need. E-mail would work best.
Thanks
