Unstyled A Valve Adjustment

What's the correct way to adjust all 4 valves on a JD unstyled A? Cold engine, #1 TDC, .020 clearance. Then, check it again when engine it warm?

If/when I check it again when warm could I just leave the valve cover off while I wait, or it's bad for the valve train because it doesn't get the oil drip from the pipe?

Thanks,

.022" IS THE COLD SETTING Set cold and forget.
When hot they will be .020"
Just make sure the rocker arm tips are not worn to where they are indented. They can be resurfaced.

If you have one of the original owners manuals it tells how to set the valve clearance. Loosen the jam nut, turn the adjustment cup out till you have no slack between valve and rocker arm. Each castellation on the adjuster is 10 thousandths. Turning it back loose two castellation's will give you 20 thou clearance. It's the best way to do it as it takes into account worn rockers. It's fast and easy right out of my owners manual for the 37 A.
