John Deere 2950 starter problems

Hey everyone,
My 2950 is giving me problems starting. You turn the key and it just goes "click" you can do this several times and sometimes it clicks and clicks and then starts but most of the time I have to climb out of the cab and start it with a screw driver. I'm assuming it's just a starter relay going bad. So my question is does the 2950 have a relay? If so where is it located?
As always any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Matt

Your having a voltage drop in the start circuit. If it starts when you jump across the starter solenoid than the starter is OK. I do not think there is a relay in the factory circuit on the JD 2950.

JD made a relay KIT for many of the tractors. I just use the square five pin relays you can buy at the parts store. You can get the relay and harness for under $10.

Take the current starter engagement wire and hook it to the activate terminal on the relay. Then hook the out put wire to the starter solenoid energize terminal. One wire will be for ground. Then supply the power right off the battery terminal on the starter. I use the relays that have the little ear with a hole in it and I just wire tie them to the wiring harness above the starter.

What this does is provides good 12 volts to the starter solenoid even with lower voltage from the start circuit. The key switch circuit will energize the relay much easier than the starter solenoid.

Thanks! That's exactly what I was wondering. I can definitely handle making that set up myself. If it works thank you very much in advance! If it doesn't.. Well then you'll be seeing anther post on it tomorrow lol.

You might try checking connections on printed circuit board in RH side of dash. The face of dash just snaps off. The circuit board has a long history of loose connections. JD offered a relay kit similar to what JD Seller mentioned to help alleviate starter engagement problems.

Mark your current system could have any one of several things going wrong. Key switch, neutral starter switch or even a harness issue. Take a volt/ohm meter and hold it on the energize terminal an have some one crank the tractor. See what voltage you have there under load. I would bet it is under 8-9 volts under the starter load. Then unhook it and see if you do not have battery voltage with it unhooked.

I run into this all of the time. It can take all day to find the bad part but just minutes to install a relay. The system will work easier/better because it does not have to carry amperage just enough to engage the relay.

Matt here is a wiring diagram of the relay kit.

TXJim is correct on the kit and circuit board. The trouble is JD kit is over $40 IRC. I buy the relay and harness together for under $10 at the local parts store.

Dunno if a 2955 is the same, but when mine had those symptoms, I replaced the solenoid to repair it. Located under the hood, on the forward side of the cowl or firewall, closets the top. Ben

I've also seen something as simple as removing 1 or 2 sealing washers from neutral start switch correct poor starting. Neutral start switch is under cab on top of rockshaft housing accessed by removing panel in cab floorboard.

What ive found is its the bulkhead connector on the fire wall that goes from the dash to under the hood. The pins get loose over time and do not contact good. Either cut the connector out and solder wires together or install new connector and repin wires. Now tractor starts every time,no more wiggling harness to get it to start.
