Opinions on 4850 FWA????

I farm about 420 acres of wheat (why??? I don't know).

Anyway, I'm needing a tractor. I have a regular job...six days a week, get off around two in the afternoon. I need something that isn't too expensive and would rather have something like a regular tractor with fwa. My brother would like to borrow it during harvest to pull a graincart.

I've found a 4850 with around 8000 hours...looks pretty slick with no oil leaks. I haven't driven it yet, but would like opinions on the 4850 fwa. They would like to get 32,500. As far as I can tell, that might be a reasonable price for this tractor.

Fire away! and thanks in advance!

If it runs and drives to your satisfaction, jump on it. Priced to sell around here. Neighbor has had one for several years. Had a few issues the first year that could not be predicted but has been trouble free since. We did have to redo the air conditioning this spring which isn't a bad life from original cab pipes.

I am an avid fan of the Deere's of that vintage (50 series through 60 series). The 15 speed powershift was a huge advancement versus the former 8 speed. There were the owners of 4850's who would open up the smoke screw on the fuel injection pump, and the would put out the horsepower, but would also puke out head gaskets, too. If you can find out any prior information on the tractor, that would be beneficial. I would not be so afraid of one with that amount of hours on it, provided it did not have indications it had been used and abused. Might be a good idea to talk to a service technician you know and trust about what to look out for on one of these tractors, regardless of the hours. He might be able to also offer some ideas on what a tractor with those hours might need to have for mechanical attention at this stage of its life, too.
