4020 hard getting into 2nd range

Trying to diagnose an early 4020 synchro that has been getting harder and harder to shift into the 2nd range on the pattern. For example getting into 1st gear is fine, shifting into 3rd requires you to feather the clutch to get it in. Similarly, if you are in 1st reverse it is difficult to get it into 3rd gear. Once you get it into 3rd gear it doesn't slip or grind though. Acts the same in all the other 2nd range gears.

Linkages are not worn out and adjustment was checked per the service manual. With the top plate off the transmission no obvious problems are showing up. Even moving the shifter lever with the tractor not running is showing the same symptoms. Easy to shift into 1st range but requires you to twist the other gear shafts to get it into 2nd range. We're ready to split it but are we looking for a synchro drum that has some bad teeth? What else would you look for?

How does it shift into the high range when your moving?

Does it grind as you're try to get it into the high range? Or not at all?

Are the shifting levers at the transmission have big worn holes?

When you try to shift into gear on level ground without holding the brakes, does the tractor start to move, but not go into gear?

Our 4020 had a misadjusted clutch, causing some hard shifting. The operating levers were not all contacting the throwout bearing at the same time, due to pin wear.

Matt, thanks for the reply. I haven't tried to put it into second range with the tractor stopped and not holding onto the brakes. I can see where a mis-adjusted clutch would make it tough to shift into all ranges.

Since this one is hard to shift into this range when the tractor isn't even running i'm leaning towards finding a bad shift collar or shift drum. Seems like those teeth just aren't meshing right. We will find out soon. Thanks.
