Looking into buying a John Deere 830 Generation II

I am looking at a 1975 John Deere 830 generation II, it has a 3 cylinder diesel engine, it runs, drives and has 4 new tires. They are asking $3000 but they said they would go down to $2700 which is the price of the tires. Someone else told me to check the hydraulic fluid because the brakes can go bad, contaminate the fluid and ruin the whole hydraulic system??? I did not know if this was correct or not, I don't know much about JD.

This tractor also has the Collar Shift, I have never heard of one and I was wondering what it was?

Thanks for any info

Collar shift is the non synchro Trans, should be an 8 speed . Good little tractor,
likely a 2 stage clutch, not sure if open or closed Centre, but should have wet
brakes. If all works well, there should be no problem with the hydraulic/transmission
. Ben

830 built in Mannheim were all open-center hyd's. I remember selling them when they were new. IIRC it was sell them & forget them as they rarely required warranty repairs. Moisture in hyd oil is very detrimental to brake linings. Moisture can enter hyd system by means of cracked gear shift lever boots.

IMHO $2700 is a very good price even though the paint is faded and metal has surface rust.

Thanks for everyone's info, can anyone tell right off hand what the ground clearance is? I am going to be using this tractor for a little bit of cultivating corn and potatoes.
Thanks

They are good little tractors. Dad had a new seven speed 820 without power steering traded that for a new 830 with 143 loader then traded that on a 2040. There was very little difference in any of the three. That is a good price and I would buy it if in my area. Tom

For what it's worth all of the "little" 830's listed on TractorHouse right now are double that
price. It sounds like a lot of us, including me, are jealous of the good deal you're looking at!

Thanks for everyone info, I hope it isn't sold before I can get up the cash, I'm trying to sell my 79' VW bus but no luck yet, hopefully it sales soon so I can get this tractor.
Thanks again
