John Deere M Ignition coil

The 'ol girl quit while mowing the roadside with the sickle. Towed her up to the house and diagnosed no spark. Decided it was a good time to install the rebuild kit for the carburetor while she was down for maintenance. Went down to NAPA to get a 6 volt coil. As I was removing the old one I noticed it had been hooked up backwards by th PO. I hooked the new one up (-) to the points and (+) to the ignition. She sure runs a lot smoother now. Not sure how much of that to attribute to the backward coil or the carburetor rebuild.

If your tractor is still (+) ground, having the coil's (+) terminal connected to the distributor WAS correct.

All Deere two cylinders were originally POSITIVE GROUND in which case as Bob noted + of coil wires to Distributor/Points. If it had polarity changed reverse that. They still fire and run if the coil has opposite polarity, but its not as efficient. More often its the points that are burned or mis gapped then an ignition coil problem.

Cool, then for NEG ground you have it correct, - to Distributor/Points. If it had an ammeter its leads would have to had been swapped so it don't read bass ackwards.
