Model 70 clutch help needed

I posted earlier how the brass clutch fork blew apart and wrecked the sleeve making the clutch what I thought was stuck in the engaged position. Well, I bought a used clutch drum assembly including the sleeve, gear and bearings. I re assembled the clutch and it does not "snap" into engagement or disengagement. It freewheels when the lever is straight up, and the brake works when pulled back. When pushed forward the clutch starts to engage, but does not snap into position. Also should the drum freewheel when in gear with the clutch disengaged? I also bought a new clutch disk kit with springs and castle nuts.

Did you forget to put the Friction plate behind the Clutch Driver,,??

NO, the clutch drum should NOT free-wheel when the transmission is in gear. (Clutch engaged or not)...if it does, something is BAD wrong...

Are you POSITIVE that replacement clutch-drum is for a 70..??

I put the disk behind the driver. I assembled it exactly as the parts list showed.
The drum does not freewheel when in gear. I just wanted to make sure.
I bought the drum on ebay, it looks identical to the one I took off. He has quite a few different ones for sale and assured me it was the right one.
I haven't started the tractor and tried it when it was running, I just didn't want to mess something up. This is my first full size tractor and I just don't know much about them. I bought a "shop manual" but it's not very detailed. I also have an operators manual and parts manual - I'm reading as much as I can about the Model 70. I really appreciate your help.

Sounds like you have not adjusted it tight enough, turn the nuts down 1/4 turn at a time till you get the snap.

IIRC those also may have some additional adjustments on the pulley brake operating pin via shims that may need done.

Thanks! I saw that in the shop manual, but it said only on later model 70's. Mine is an early model. I'll double check.

Adjust the Clutch Bolts evenly until you get the "Snap" you like..then put the cotter pins back in..

Remember, you DO NOT have to have that clutch adjusted so tight that a Woman or kid could not pull it back...( once the linings have settled in and final adjustment is made)..

Clutch engagement and disengagement is technique instead of brute force. A flick of the wrist uses the inertia of the heavy clutch handle to engage and disengage . No need to heave on the clutch handle like swinging a bar door into a windstorm .

Got the clutch adjusted and working great thanks to my neighbors dad. He was here from Iowa - a retired farmer and John Deere expert. Had to adjust the clutch shift rod and the brake, then messed with the castle nuts. Works great now!
