Deere 2640 starter issues

Neighbor's 2640 starter will not work 100% of the time when the key switch is turned. When you jump the positive on the solenoid over to the terminal with the wire from the switch it will crank 100% of the time. This probably means the starter and solenoid are OK. I took the cover over the transmission off and put a jumper wire on the transmission neutral switch and it started 100% of the time. Do these switches go bad???? Am I on the right track? Anyone know what the part number is??? or the cost of the neutral switch? Thanks.

Neutral start switch kit, #RE38390 is about $55 at your favorite JD dealership.

Before spending $55 at JD remove switch then remove a sealing washer or 2 then reinstall switch to see if switch will operate correctly.
