70 Ventilator Pump Cover, Epilogue

Okay, I got my 70 back together, power
steering works great with new pump, all is
well with the world. Until you get back
towards the governor. Back there, engine oil
continues to drip out of my ventilator pump
cover. So...now I'm replacing my new-style
A3414R cover with the older style A4188R
cover that is machined for the big o-ring.
My question is, why did the engineers opt
for the new-style cover without an o-ring?
What purpose could that have possibly
served? Or does Mother Deere just mess with
us sometimes? Hugh

I don't know and likely the ones who designed it are long gone. I can only guess maybe it was press fitted in there at one time like the casting is up front by the pump ? I have hade some of those leak and had to braze them in place to the tube to fix them.
