JD-630 Charging Question

I cannot keep my JD-630 charging. I have a 12 volt positive ground generator. I put new brushes/bearings in the generator. A year ago, a new regulator. The tractor wiring is new.

The only way I can get my generator to charge is to jump the "Bat" to the "Gen" on the voltage regulator. The tractor will charge 13+ volts for awhile. After a couple minutes, the generator will quit charging and drop back to the battery 12.4. If I polarize the generator again, the tractor will charge for a few minutes. Then quit. I am using a voltage meter to check my battery voltages too. Once the generator quits charging, it will not charge again. I can turn on the lights and the amp meter shows a strong discharge.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Have you tried a different voltage regulator, This spring my B was doing the same thing after I had the generator checked out it was the voltage regulator was weak. I also have a 630 that the armature went bad on. It took out the voltage regulator, Both of these had been on the tractor for at lease 25 years. I only but the top one from NAPA, Its the same one that John Deere use to supply. Their cheap one is made in India and sells for about a third of the best one. I have a bucket full of them I've had to replace over the years. just my two cents, john

Basically, the VR's internal cutout relay is whats between the BAT and GEN/ARM terminals and it has to fully close with a good low resistance contact so the gennys output (GEN/ARM) can get to and charge the battery (BAT). Also as Teddy was mentioning, there MUST be a good ground between the VR's metal frame and tractor frame ground, you might want to insure good bright shiny non pained non rusted electrical connection from VR to Genny or Tractor and insure the genny also has a clean ground. If that's all okay the VR may be bad.
