3010 frame rail bolts

I have a 3010 utility with a westendorf 21 loader. The frame rail bolts are constantly breaking or working loose. This has been a problem since Dad and Grandad bought the tractor in the 80's. What's the fix? Are the bolts supposed to have a tapered head like a lug nut? Thank you.

My uncle has a 3020 row crop with a 148 loader and that has been a real problem. It has had the loader for about 40 yrs and has gone through about 6 or 8 sets of bolts.

Frame rail should have tappered bolts.
The breaking is a typical fatigue problem. You need longer stretched lenght. Those frame rails have alwost 0 stretched length...
Can be fixed by putting a 1 inch thick spacer with 4 holes or 4 individuals spacers. Other way is to countersunk the block (threads start 1-2 inch from the block face0 but I do not know how deep you can drill, so I would not do it.
Your loader frame is probably in the way of putting spacers, but that mod is worth trying.

Ditto what fdt860 stated about factory frame bolts being tapered heads. Spec's listed below.

Are you talking about the bolts that hold the loader on, or hold the frame onto the tractor?

Are you torquing the bolts to 300 ft.lbs. when you install them? If the threads are wallowed or striped I drill them out and install frame bolts to a 5020.

If threads are not too bad, there is a longer bolt but
I'm not at the shop now.
Maybe Tx Jim will see this
and get you the number. I can't remember right what
tractor they were used on. I use Belzona with those. But
that stuff is around $400 now.
There is also a larger diameter (3/4) bolt used somewhere
if threads are no good. There are two head depths. You
want the thinner one.

hello,, i don't have the part # in front of me, but the frame bolt for a 7020 articulate tractor is longer IF you have some threads left.

That must be the same bolt D- was referring to & it's longer than the other bolt I posted previously.

I have experienced the same issue on my JD 4020 and JD158 loader. Just as others have stated replace the bolts, but inspect the frame rails as you will find that the tapered holes for these holts are worn not allowing the tapered bolts to hold the frame rail into position. Worn frame rails will work up and down causing the bolts to loosen up and break as you have stated.

Also, someone mentioned the torque. When there is not a loader attached to the tractor you should torque these bolts down to 250 ft. lbs. With a loader you need to torque them to either 275 - 300 ft.lb. as per my JD158 operators manual.
I do assume that you only have a 1/2" breaker bar, and I can also assume that with a 1/2" breaker bar your not even getting close to the 275 - 300 ft. lbs. as I could never get that close. It pays to have the proper tools. If not, I highly recommend borrowing a 3/4" torque wrench and 15/16" socket.

When tightening these bolts up, clean the bolt holes out with acetone and apply some Loctite 242, the blue stuff. You can break the 242 loose later on if needed.

I hope this helps.
