So after really pushing hard on the dealer for diagnostics I ended up taking the tractor back from them without a repair. I don't own all of my equipment (I lease land and run some land for an owner) so sometimes certain things are out of my control. This was one of them where this tractor went to a closer JD dealer than I like to use to save on hauling costs. I also was not the one using it when "the pump went". Anyways the issue was noises from the pump, no real loss of actual functions. This is the 40 CM3 pump. The issue was the drive shaft off the front of the pump had lost all but one bolt and was vibrating. It chewed up the splines inside the drive shaft and done some damage to the rubber cushion between the two coupling disks. By some stroke of luck the splines on the pump itself had to my untrained eye no damage. New drive shaft, rubber cushion thingie and bolts with loc-tite and problem solved. About $500 with new fluids as I also changed the fluid at the same time not trusting it had been truly done before. I was right on that assumption. They only changed the filter element and topped off the fluid. The sump screen and sump areas were full of gunk but luckily nothing that looked like linings and no metal.

I have to say I like my situation how I am currently farming except when these sorts of things come up! Not being the owner and having to work with others can make things really challenging.

Sounds like you repaired it yourself ? If so you are going to be the go to guy for these Dubuques !

Expert - no. I did get it done on my own but all you guys on here smarter than me have a lot to teach me before I am any sort of an expert!

Glad you figured it out. It is common for the splines to wear in the coupler and not the shaft as the shaft is much harder than the cast coupler.

Glad you got it sorted. I can only imagine what would have happened if a new front pump was buttoned up to the no good shaft....."wow this pump is bad too?"
