JD 520 Ignition Switch

I am starting to re wire my 520 and wonder what the resistor on the ignition switch is meant for? I have a problem with the gages not working and am in the process of tracking that down too. I suspect a bad ammeter or an open in the switch circuit or a bad switch itself.
The resistor I am referring to is mounted on the switch its self and is a round item with a wire winding around it. Is that meant for the fuel gage circuit perhaps?
I wish there was a diagram of the switch its self just showing the terminals and what they are for! I have found other wiring diagrams on here but none like that.

Typically an Ignition Ballast Resistor is a rather large ceramic/bakelite bathtub style power resistor rated for maybe 25 or so watts mounted in the coil or steering pedestal area, while a resistor for light dimming purposes is often found on the light switch itself.

Possibly this shall assist you:

In the Archives type in as per below and view the JD 520 electrical schematics:

Thanks for the info. I have the ceramic resistor for reducing current to the points also. This one is for the light dimmer as you guys said. I never use the lights so did not think of that.
My other problem is that the separate white wire to the neg battery cable broke free making it impossible for the generator to send a charge to the battery! Now I am trying to figure the best way to connect the small wire to the large battery cable with some sort of clamp or something!
I really like this tractor. The neg battery cable must be 4 ft long and difficult to replace if I ever had to. I bet it costs a bundle too!

Take a look at the diagram below.

Note the following connected to the ignition switch:
Key 3 = Lamp, dash
Key 4 = Lead, switch to ammeter (black)
Key 7 = Lead, switch to positive terminal of coil (brown)
Key 8 = Lead, switch to rear lamp (black)
Key 10 = Lead, switch to rear warning lamp (red)
Key 16 = Lead, wiring, ignition resistor to switch (black)
Key 21 = Harness, wiring, side lamps

The information above is listed in the descriptions below.

Hope this helps.
