Have 430U split for clutch problem. Decided to replace the flywheel ring gear as teeth on old one were worn pretty good as I had turned it once already. Book says to put "champfered edge of teeth toward back of tractor" new ring gear has straight teeth with no chamfer. Am I going to have a problem getting starter bendix to engage? I could put slight chamfer on teeth with hand grinder but hate to get togethe and have it not work. Thanks for any assistance.

yes you should take air flapper wheel with medium fine grit and put some bevel on the teeth.
other wise you are going to have a bad spot on the new ring gear right away.
If it was me I would return the ring gear if its not correct and just flip over your old one
and bevel it.
thats what I do with them.
nice to get two wear out chances on one part.
let us know how you make out.
it is a lot of work to taper them teeth but you will be well rewarded hearing that starter
work properly .

Put a new straight tooth ring gear on an 8N awhile back, bendix worked just fine.
I put it back together with straight edges. has worked fine for the few times I started it so far. I had wondered about turning old ring gear over. Only divverence seems to be a slight bevel along the inside on the inside, side toward flywheel I suppose to make it go on easier. That would be easy to put on. Are both sides of each tooth beveled? old one is worn enough it is hard to tell. thanks for the help

The flywheel band is beveled on one side just like the starter drive to allow easier and fuller contact at the start of engagement(and disengagement to a degree). This is turn greatly extends both of their life cycles. The straight gear will work fine but will be hard on the starter drive. It's now engaging on the tip of the tooth so the wear is much greater.
