I'm doing some routine maintenance. My op manual says i should put 6-8 shots of grease into a grease fitting for lubrication of the rear axle bearing. problem is i have 1/4" (or 3/8") plugs where the op manual says there should be a grease fitting.

picture shows right side of rear axle from behind the tractor. there is a plug in the same location on the left side of the axle.

normally when i see a plug on an axle i assume i would check and fill with 90wt. oil.

what is the purpose of the plugs ?

I think I have a 1969 820. its a 3 cyl diesel. my op manual ( OML29340 ) has some inconsistencies. for example i have 1 fuel sediment bowl, not 2. I have no assembly/housing for an air filter element and rubber dust valve.

thanks in advance for any clarity and help.

"what is the purpose of the plugs ?"

The plugs replace the grease zerks in between the suggested greasing interval of the outer rear axle bearings to prevent the uniformed from pumping grease in there every 8 hours when they grease the rest of the machine.

My experience with axle bearings and seals is to much grease is worse than not enough.Once every five years or so is plenty and do not over grease it. The only time we ever greased yearly was the 2510 that we had a mounted corn picker on. Dad bought a brand new 820 in 1969 for $2900. It had the seven speed trans(only one reverse which was third) and no power steering.Never had any problems and he traded it on an 830 because he wanted power steering. Tom
