JD 2010 diesel

I have a 1962 JD 2010 diesel (Serial number in the 17000's) that I am rebuilding and I need a little info that I can't seem to find. The tractor is set up as a 12 volt system, but I am seeing some things that lead me to believe it may have been 6 volt originally. I am concerned about the fuel sending unit, glow plugs, etc. being compatable if it was originally a 6 volt system. None of them were working when I got the tractor. Also, does anyone have any idea what the end gap on the rings should be. I don't usually work on diesel engines. I usually go with about .004 in. per inch of ring diameter for gas engines, are diesels done the same way? Thanks.

As to the ring gap, check out the treatise below. The fit of the rings in the groove is WAY more important than the end gap.

AFAIK, they are all 12 Volts, dunno why you think otherwise?

Were the glowplugs labeled as a lower voltage?

That would be typical, as they are intermittent duty and will fail if operated for too long.

Bob, the reason I was concerned was that the glow plug harness was burned through and all of the lights on the tractor were burned out. When I looked at the light bulbs they were all 6 volt bulbs, which obviously didn't work very well. Glad it was a 12 volt system originally. Thanks to everyone for their help, I will check out the link you posted.

Light bulbs aren't factory installed if they are 6 volt.
