JD A head Torque spec

I have been searching the archives for a torque spec for a 44 JD A head. Found 120ft lb. also have read 150# for the black studs in the later A's
So if the studs are black in a 44 block what should it be torqued to? Were the blocks different around the studs which allowed them to be torqued more?

Well # 1 this fellow has the specs. and # 2 John Deere NEVER did make a service manual for the model A and never will.
Good thing I & T filled in the missing models.

In many years of working on "A" series tractors this is the method of tightening that I use. Place a small amount of No. 3 (liquid) Permatex on the outside, vertical rails of the gasket taking care NOT to get anything on the inside rails (next to the cylinder). Tighten the head in 10 ft./lb. incrmements in a circular fashion. Set the valves and recheck head torque, valve lash and governor to throttle rod adjustment and you should be good to go. It has never failed me when done this way. Mike

The 60 service manual will address many specs.
