Alright Ive done the new fuel filter, carb kit, distributer new points, etc. and timed.. new plugs and wires...still misses.. Will go for awhile fine then cough cough spit spit..then runs fine under load again.. When first starting it runs then has a fit in idle speed.. DOes not seem to matter hight speed and low speed. I have blown out the fuel lines. I have not removed fuel tank yet. but I use a funnel with screen in it religiously when I fill. racked brain on this.. Can a fuel pump cause this or do they usually pump or not...anything would be more than what I got now.. so thanks in advance..

I had a fuel transfer pump do something weird one time. I think I ran out of gas or about did ? Added some more and could not get it going. First thought I got bad gas. I think I tried testing the pump but I don't recall having any proof it was bad. That was one last thing that never got replaced before after we bought the tractor and I went over it. So I figured I'd just replace it. That was the problem. And now that you mention your problems maybe mine was bad all along and I wasn't running out of gas ?

Do you have a cast iron Zenith carb. on it ? Those are the way to go too.

That's a plus.

Also never hurts to do a compression check and adjust the valves as part of a tune up.

Is this since the tune-up or after ? some of the new condensers are no good as well as spark plugs . Take a jumper wire from the bat. post of the generator reg. and put it on the input side of the coil. If that makes it run better might suspect the resister on the switch or the resister wire , or coil. Don't run it this way other than to test it .

Check the manifold for cracks and the manifold gasket. It may be sucking air causing the wrong air to fuel ratio. I had that happen on my 2010. Night an day after I installed a new manifold and gasket.

Just for grins put a different coil on it and see if your problems go away like magic. Rarely a coil will fail in intermittent mode and produce your exact symptoms. Please smash old coil if this is the issue, don't put it on a shelf somewhere such that anyone else can use it ever again.

Update: checked out the manafold and gasket.. sprayed ether around the area and around the carb no change in tractor response.. didnt see cracks or leaks.. Got a new coil as recomended.. started right up ran it around the field in low and high rpms.. nothing.. meaning behaved.. baling hay tonight..so that will be the test..

Just so you know -- that's quite a rare fix, but it still happens from time to time and just drives people insane wondering what could be wrong. Coils usually just quit, but good/half good doesn't compute for most. After a week and it is the old coil be sure to put a hole in it or otherwise take it out of contention for ever being used again.

I agree. Most coils die completely when hot. Makes me wonder if it was a bad wiring connection at the coil ? But who knows ?
