2355 Hyrdraulic Pump - Rebuild or replace

The hydraulic pump went on our 2355, 2wd, no cab no loader, 1 bank scv's. A new one is $2,700 plus labor. Deere says rebuilding "might" be cheaper but wouldn't know until they took time to take the old pump apart. Do I spend money on looking into a rebuild or just pony up for the new pump? Our local dealer has the tractor and said if the pump just needs vales/seals/etc. it should be $500 cheaper than a new pump. Thanks in advance for any input.

Should be able to get a reman for just over a thousand....that's what mine was a few years ago. Ben

What are the symptoms? I am hoping this dealer has tested this tractor properly. If you look in past posts you will see where there have been a lot of pumps repaired/replaced and it did not resolve the issue.
Tim S recommends a good replacement pump if it comes to that but here in my part of the world I generally rebuild them with all new bearings, crankcase outlet valve, stroke control valve and seal kit. Usually 2-3 hrs starting with the pump on the bench.

Agree with others, test and diagnose properly. 90% of pump rebuilds that I do are due to external leaks (shaft seal, etc.) Lots of other problems can make the pump look bad. You can get a rebuilt from Hy-Capacity for around $1100. The last one I rebuilt here ended up around $800 with new shaft and control valves and it was a walk in so no remove/install.

This tractor last year had the coupling cushions fail and were replaced. It also needed a load shaft and seals. Fluids and filters were all changed/cleaned. The only leak this machine has at this moment is from the single scv bank on it. In the past this tractor was used to run equipment bigger than it should have. The prior manager of the farm I am at used to run a 7 foot hammer mower and 7 foot brush hog on this thing. From what Deere said is the pump is just plain wore out. I also know that Hy-Gard was not used by the prior manager. They threw in the machines whatever hydraulic fluid they could find.

How hard is getting the pump in and out? I think I could do the replacement myself however time is the issue. It is not the time of the year I can steal time from everything else to make the repair.

Yes on the style tractor you have most likely lost charge oil flow,,and you will chase you tail finding why you lost it, it could be one of a dozen reasons, but the bottom line is if you are not getting oil "TO" the front pump it will not pump...remove the big line coming out of the top of the front pump, screw a short line onto the fitting start the engine and head the open end of the line to a bucket,, my guess is there will not be enough oil come out to lube you pocket watch,,,till you find out "why" you can't condemn the front pump.. and becarful about taking it to a dealer for repair, the time to find this problem can be time consuming...

So the price is $2200 just to reseal the old pump and put a few valves in it? What a rip off (in my opinion). On the bench, you are talking maybe 1 hour to take that pump apart and put it back together. As far as "rebuild" goes? Unless things have changed, the average Deere dealer has no way to renew the bore in those pumps and "rebuild" them. It is just a hunk of metal with eight cylinders and eight pistons. Pistons can be renewed, but not the bores. At least not in the average Deere shop.

If it was mine, I'd just yanked it out, put a seal kit in, and fixed whatever made it stop working in first place. Likely just the stroke-control valve.

I'm getting a feeling that the refurbished front pump that you and your dealer want is going to make zero difference .
As previously stated. That front pump can't move oil if it is not being supplied by the transmission's low pressure pump.

I haven't read any real description of exactly what happened when you lost your hydraulics. In most cases, if your main pump lost its charge oil, it would NOT all of a sudden quit. It would get weak, make noises, cavitate, etc. and then die. On the other hand, if something like the stroke-control-valve in the main-pump got one speck of debris in it and was held open - you would lose all hydraulics - instantly.
