John Deere 5420 - wanted evaluation.

Is a John Deere 5420 a good tractor? I'm looking to buy one and wanted some opinions. I'm looking at one that has around 2200 hours, a cab, a loader, and the tires are in good shape. It is two wheel drive.

Also, what is a fair price for it?

pritty good tractor once the bugs have been worked out. make sure itr has a afterarket fuel pump added goes under the cab on right side deere has the fix it just costs big bucks, tractor starts better and runs better now. power isgood and starts wwell in winter good tractor expect to pay in the 20k range for a nice one.
 
I'm not fan of utility sized 2wd loader tractors. I have a 5425 with FWD. With a decent load in the bucket, you really need the front axle drive. If you're not doing much loader work, perhaps this is not a big issue for you.
 
5420 is a good loader/mower tractor, but don't expect to take it to the field and do lots of heavy tilling with it all year long. As has already been mentioned, for loader work, MFWD is almost a necessity, as is a good amount weight added to the rear of the tractor. I don't recall if a power reverser was available yet of the 5420, may have came later, but that would be good. However, the synchronized transmission option will suffice because 2nd gear and reverse are a straight back/forth shift and both are synchronized. To keep the tractor's cost/price down, it has a dry clutch as do most competitively priced tractors of that era, so keep it adjusted and don't ride it. Again, my memory fails me, but if it was the Simms made cab that's on the 5420, it's not much of a cab. It's not very well isolated and as a result is quite noisy. The cab ID tag will tell you if it's a Simms. Also, I think the Simms cabs are black while the later, better cabs are green - maybe it's the other way around - check the tag.
