Engine Rebuild - Parts Question

I am doing an inframe rebuild on my JD 2640. I've sent the head to a machine shop and they did a valve job.....I used plastigauge on the rod bearings and they're all in good shape.....all within tolerances. I'm ready to buy my engine kit. Is there any benefit in getting the engine kit directly from John Deere? Or can I order it from the place with the best price?

I use Reliance kits, better price and just as good or better, and I don't think you can get a complete kit like the 6 cyl. come in,, you will get 4 piston kits and a gasket set.

I don't want to step on Tim, because I consider his opinion the best here.
Does the machine shop which did your work sell parts? They have to have some access to parts. My preference is to give the business to the place that does the work.

Deere no longer makes kits they put them up for bids every so many years and buy what meets their specs. I use Reliance in the larger tractors and use Maxi-force in the utilities like you have. Tom

Hi Just as a point of interest this site sells the parts for 2640 motors the inframes sell for about 760 upwards depending what motor kit you need. If
you buy from Deere it will probably be over priced A&I parts or something like that. Thats what they do round here if you aren't careful. I never use
genuine motor parts unless I have to prices can be crazy on a lot of it.

I have used one of the names mentioned here before , the cost was cheaper for me than the average guy due to trade discounts to and it was nice
stuff, and never had a job back using the parts.
Lots of guys will say I want genuine as this cheap stuff don't last. My thought is if your 2640 or other older tractor got this far on original if
it gets half as far again or better . There will be other problems show up before the motors worn out again, as to why you get rid of it or scrap it.
Regards Robert

Not a good idea to inframe a 2640.
How will you replace the balancer shaft bushings?
That is a major fail point on those engines.

Well, I called Maxiforce. Since I'm just a farmer they wouldn't sell to me directly and referred me to their "largest seller" in the fourth largest city in the US, which is not far from me. That place said they didn't sell for John Deere tractors and gave me another place to call. That place said "they won't let us sell those" whatever that means.

So it looks like no one will sell me a maxiforce kit. I guess I'll either use the ones from this site or the A&I ones from the Deere dealer. Anyone have a preference?
