Found a 2010 Tri-cycle row crop. Man says something is wrong in the rear end. Seems like I heard somewhere that these tractors had a weakness in the final drive or something. Can someone tell me what their problem was?

Both the 1010 and 2010 where JD's problem child tractors and they where not very good from the get go. Parts for them if you can find them are very high. I have what is left of a 1010 and have worked on a 2010 and they where not built friend as to working on them. If your thinking about buying it I would run not walk away from it unless you have a couple parts machines on hand

I agree with old stay away from them. The 1010 and 2010 motors have an cylinder arrangement. They are bad about leaking anti freeze into your oil system. If you catch it fast enough you can replaced the O-rings on the bottom of the sleeves. If you don't and you end up throwing a rod or damaging a cylinder you can not replace a sleeve as they come in a section of 4. Very hard to find and expensive. Not one of john deere best for sure. Allis d-17 or ford 900 are a lot better tractors and cheaper as you will pay for the john deere name. Just my 3 cents worth.
