J D Intake/exhaust manifold studs/bolts!

HELP!!! I was starting to put my "A" back together and ran into a little problem. I thought I would just put in some bolts to secure the manifold. THEN I discovered the dang things would not tighten up!
When I took the manifold back off I discovered the 3/8 bolts would go into the block holes but I could just wiggle them back out by hand. When I checked the JD parts manual I discovered they were supposed to be 7/16 inches. I also looked real close at the old studs that I sawed off and discovered they were a square cut thread on the block side!

SO - any advice???? I really do not want to put a stud back in place. I think I would rather have a set of bolts. I'm thinking of re-taping the holes to a taper cut thread -7/16 in size.

If you use bolts and/or re-tap holes, be careful of the push rod tubes. Been awhile since I was in an A head, but the stud holes are over or near over some? all? of the push rod tubes. On some B's I have done with bolts, I measured each piece the bolt went thru, washer, lock washer gasket manifold etc and the threaded hole length and trimmed the bolt to that length. Must use sealer, rtv is good, on the bolts.HTH

I will have to go back and re-think this ---- I never thought of the push rods and of using some sealer! Thanks for the input and tips- I surely would have screwed up all my efforts by not doing this!
I will take the time to measure all connections carefully!

All studs have a different thread on the end opposite the nut.
This was to keep them from trying to screw out when removing
nuts. Some people installed the axle studs (as well as others)
backwards by mistake causing them to screw out and making it
really difficult to remove those high priced nuts.
Personally I would go back with studs.

I am about to bite the BIG bullet and see about finding a set of studs for this tractor.
I stopped at the local JD parts department and found the two short studs are available at $26 each. The longer studs are also available but at $28 apiece.
So - I guess I will go to the dealer and ask for mercy - if any !

How about the rest of you - any suggestions as to where to get a full set of Intake/Exhaust manifold studs for this JD Model A -???
