4320 relay for cab accessories

On my 4320 when I got it the cab accessories wouldn't work I checked all the wiring and switches and found that the relay under the dash was only putting out 8 volts to the accessories in the cab. I got a new one from the dealer which is different than the original looks just like a car starter relay and everything worked great. I started mowing last nite turned the blower on and it worked for only ten minutes then everything quit and now when I turn the key the relay won't even click so I'm not getting any power to the accessories. What would cause this? I'm thinking I need a different relay like the one I took out which is a round one that has a different part number ar78382 the one I put in was # ar54484 could that be my problem? Thanks

Relays like this look like starter solenoids for older vehicles but are internally different in that the magnetic coil is wound for constant duty, vs. the typical starter relay that has a short duty cycle.

The incorrect, starter-type relay will soon overheat and fail, as yours did, I've seen that many times.

Maybe the solenoid you got somehow got mis-boxed/mislabled, or just simply failed prematurely.

However, as near as I can tell, either of the numbers you posted should be a continuous-duty accessory relay.

jdparts.com shows the part # as AR78382, which currently subs to # AR91166.

First, check for voltage between the small terminal on the solenoid and it's metal case. If there's battery voltage there but the solenoid doesn't "snap in", it has failed.

At that point, I would replace it with the latest part #, then check current draw through it, to make sure something it powers isn't shorted, putting a severe current draw through the solenoid.

I have had this trouble before on other applications. I found out a golf cart relay is nearly identical and works great. Most auto parts stores carry them. Mike

Thanks I will check that out. That's the part number I was going to get too, but it also lists ar54484 which is what my dealer gave me it was only 24 bucks the other one lists at 70 something so maybe it was wrong. When checking current draw what's the best way to do it hook from the relay to the accessories and see what it reads?

I use a clamp-on meter capable of reading DC Amps.

It all depends on what type of meter you have available. Even a simple Ammeter as used on the instrument panel of an older tractor will do the job.

Alright I have a clamp on ammeter I'll have to check to be sure it an do dc. What do you think the normal amps should be?

I would forget the round type relays. There are service bulletins telling you to go to the newer small square type found in cars and such. They last much longer and are just plug in to replace. My local parts store keeps the pig tail and relays. Both will run you about $15 for a 60 AMP relay. There are JD part numbers for the exact same thing but you pay about $40 for them.

Did you happen to check the circuit breakers? There are the small two studded ones behind the temp gauge and also a round black one with two screws above the starter that could be tripping. chris

JD, I don't think that's a 60 Amp relay. "Ice cube relays"/"Bosch-style: relays rated higher than 40 Amps or so have wider terminal tabs on the ones that carry power. Like THIS:

That little relay will outlast/outperform several of those old design relays.
If your relay is not working the problem is probably in front of it.
Sometimes the red connector in front of the cab ( under the hood ) can cause problems.

I looked up the parts diagrams and they do show a square type plug in relay and the kit for it is ar91166 would this be the part number to replace the older style one I have?

Yes that is the kit I have been using the last ten years of so. They last much longer. Check out your local parts store as the relay is a Bosch one and they usually have the pig tail. The parts house cost will be less than JD on this item. I keep the pig tail and relays on hand. I use them in various places not just on tractors.

Yes. Their price is ridiculous, though.

I recently bought a 25-pack of them on ebay for less than the cost of ONE from DEERE.

Seller has them in quantities of one for $5.35 shipped.
