rear 38 inch rims for a john deere 4020 fwa

just wondering about putting new tires on my 1969 4020 fwa tractor
size is 16.9 x 38.
currently there is 34 inch rears on the back and with the front wheel assist
the tractor is running up hill and I dont like the looks of it.
I know I have to change the hubs and will need rims. so the question is
how wide of a rear rim do I need to find for the new 16.9 38 tires
will rims that had 15.5 38 work. I have a brand new set of them and they are 14 inches
wide. seems a little narrow for the 16.9 but maybe they accept both.?
I hate to buy new rims also when I got a new set already .
I just want to make sure 14 inches is wide enough to not do any harm to my new rubber or make
it look out of place.
any advice appreciated.

I am going to put on the proper 38 inch hubs on the tractor.
I want it as original as possible from the factory so the step up rims are a negative.
thanks for the info, I was sure the 14 inch rim did both sizes but there is not much info
out there on the net.
Unverferth I believe sells new rims, thats plan B

14" rims are fine for 16.9-38s. I 4000 with 16.9s and and a 4020 with 18.4-34s and they are the exact same height. Depending on the tire brand, you may or may not see a difference.

I would gladdly take them off your hands tom but I live up in ontario canada.
a little piece away.
thanks for the offer.

You will need the proper castings with 3 3/8 wedges.4320/4430 will work. The true step up rims actually look fine but not original.I would go with 16in rims but 14s will work but again if true original would have came with 16s

I think you are right.I have one here and looks like 15in rim.The 14s will work fine just when you use the word original it means different things to several people.16.9x38 are my favorite tire combo on a 4020.I think the 18.4x38 look a little too big for the fender size but with factory cab look ok.Some people like the bigger 4320 type fenders that were an option in 71/72 and one of the high sellers at Mecums last sale was that way.Sitting level always looks better to me.

I think you are wasting your time and $$ switching to 16.9 38. If you want to make it look correct go to 18.4 38. My neighbor had a 1972 4020 FWA that came with this set up from the factory and sat level. Also the step up rims are nice, but I agree that they don't look original so in this case I agree with changing the cast hubs.
