What needs to be removed to replace the outer most seals on the TOM shaft?

Can I just remove the lift arms?

I'm going to bring this back to the top. I'm trying to remove the back portion of the TOM to replace the seals. Can't seem to get it loose. Am I missing something?

The service manual devotes several pages of images, drawing and text for that job.
Using the manual eliminates several hours of guessing, broken pieces and re-work .
There is the early and late style of seals with replaceable bushings .

B&D, thank you for chiming in. Maybe I should have worded it different? Which manual would tell me wither I can do like I asked. The one for the 40 or SM 2019 covering the 420? Since all the research points to needing possible both. I have a downloaded copy of SM 2019 and did not see that section covered.

SM2019 should cover most of it but come to think of it. I can't recall if SM2019 info is only "good" to the slant steer 420. The late 330/430/435/440 and 1010 rockshaft info maybe in factory service bulletin or the 1010 manual for certain.

Mine apparently still has bushings and not seals. I have moved the shaft to the left until it is just below flush with the housing, but that is as far as it will go.

Removing the rockshaft and the back half of the TOM housing without removing the assembly off the tractor. The rockshaft will drive out with no problem. The back half can be removed by loosening the 4 screws holding the complete assembly, and removing the screws holding the back housing half, then lifting it just enough to clear the two dowel pins holding the back section in place on the frame. Then it simple pulls away from the main housing.

Ran into a new snag. The right side of the housing has a bushing and no seal. The left side has a bushing and two seals. If you look at the parts manual should be either a seal on both sides or bushings and seals on both sides, depending on serial number.

Will follow up with pics shortly.
