What size disk for a 4440

I know soil types differ around the country but tell me what size disk or field cultivator you're pulling with your 4440. Thanks

I pull a 25 ft krause disc and a 25 ft 1600 john deere chisel plow. Also use it on a 18 row 22" 7200 mounted planter. It handles every thing fine.

I have a 4640 set at 180 horsepower. I have pretty heavy clay type soils on our farm. I had a 24 foot model 230 John Deere disk and that tractor handled it in pretty much all conditions very well. I would tend to think a 496 Case IH disk of that size would handle comparably. I purchased a 24 foot 330 John Deere disk, which is a much heavier disk than the 230. I think the model 630 was the replacement for the 330. If you want to really allow that disk to go into the ground deep, it is too much disk for the 4640. I have a friend who found the same issue with a 24 foot 596 Case IH disk he had, which from what I can determine, is comparable to the John Deere 330/630 disk. In the soils we have, and I may be old fashioned, but I like to work the ground down to a depth of about 3 1/2 to 4 inches. My field cultivator is a 3400 Wil-Rich with a newer style 4 bar spring tooth harrow. The shanks are set on 7 inch spacing and we run 7 1/2 inch sweeps on that field cultivator, which is 26.5 feet wide. In the conditions I have noted, that field cultivator is too much for the 4640. That field cultivator is about the right size for our larger tractor with MFWD running 225 horsepower. For incorporating preplant herbicides, I want to get that field cultivator up and moving to around 5.5 mph to 6 mph.................I prefer 6 mph for soil and herbicide mixing. Back in the day when we had a 2500 Wil-rich field cultivator with a 3 bar spring tooth harrow and the same size sweeps, we struggled, especially in warmer weather, with a 4630 set up with a power shift transmission. We also had more common streaking in our early weed control with our pre plant herbicide because it was not mixed adequately in single pass tillage. Putting another 30 horsepower out front of that field cultivator and moving up a gear or two changed all that. If running the 3400 cultivator shallower and/or slower, the 4640 will handle it. Smaller sweeps on the field cultivator, again the 4640 will handle it, too. Not sure what your specific needs are, but hope I communicated my needs and my specific conditions to you. In my conditions, and if I was sizing something up for a 4440, I would probably go with a 20 to 22 foot John Deere 230 disk or same size Case IH 496 disk.....................maybe up to 24 foot at the most. If I was trying to pull a 3400 Wil-Rich Field cultivator set up like the one I have now, probably 20 to 22 foot, and if I was trying to pull a 2500 or model 2800 with a 3 bar harrow on it, I would not go over 24 foot. I would suggest seeing if you can find one about 24 feet wide, which you could narrow up by dropping a pair or two pair of outer shanks if needed. Our 3400 started out at 30 foot wide, and we dropped 6 shanks. It is sized about right for our needs. If I opt for a larger tractor some day, I can add those shanks back on.

I got a 480, 24 ft IHC disk,I pulled with the 4620, with 18.4X38 with cast dual's, 158 hp, I wouldn't want to much more.

Discs vary a lot and conditions make a big difference.Anything much over 20ft in the heavier type disc would be plenty.Field cultivators anything over 27ft would be plenty also.Better to go a little faster and have less slippage and compaction. Its not how much you can pull but how many acres you get done.A 5 bottom plow at 5MPH will do same as 6 at 4MPH.Of course not much plowing anymore.

I have a 4430, so a little less tractor, but comparable. I pull a 15 foot BWF disk with a 22ish foot spring tine harrow behind it. Without the harrow, I *might* be able to pull a 20 footer. I also pull a 7 shank disk chisel and 6 row planter. I'd sure like to upgrade to a 4440.

I am constantly amazed on here at how wide of equipment people can pull with comparable tractors. I couldn't pull a 26 foot disk with a 4840 on my farm. I'm on very hilly ground with lots of soil types, but heavy clay is predominate.

18-21ft disc is about right with a 4440, remember that they need to be pulled 'briskly' to do a good job, if you are struggling for traction it will show up in the finish, and also in the crop stand,,and you will cover more ground..I call it having "Harmony" in the outfit..the tractor will run cooler and better and the operator will not be fighting it..

I have a 4430 @160hp with 20.8-38 duals. It plays with a 16ft jd 210 disc. Kind of a light disc though. I'd like to step up to one in 20ft+/-range, which I think you'd be happy with. Also pull a 21ft ih 45 vibrashank. That's a good match. Wouldn't want much more hp and traction wise, but does very well in the 5-5.5mph area.

Back in the 70's we ran a 5X16" 1450 plow and a 21 ft. 230 disc on a 4430 and it worked well, so a 4440 is a couple notches better...

Thanks guys. Now I am pulling a 13 ft JD210 disk with a Massey 285 (81 hp ) I want to go bigger to cut down on time as my job makes it hard to get everything done on time.
