What am I forgetting or overlooking???

I have a 1951 "A" that I am working on. Basically I have it all apart on the top end. Just put on a new head and it is all torqued down. Set the valves and it turns over well with the electric starter. Seems to have good compression as it was spitting all kinds of oil and gunk from the two cock valves on the bottom. SOOOOOO---- I decided to see if it would fire by pouring some raw gas down the intake side and cranked it with the starter.
At this point I would say -MAAAYYYbe a little belch of smoke from the right side exhaust - but now outstanding pops or putts!
I did not take the magneto off or even touched it at all. I did put on new plug wires and installed new spark plugs.

So - What am I forgetting??? What to try next???

You say you poured some gas down the intake side. By that do you mean of the three holes in the top of the head, you poured gas down the hole farthest to the left side of the tractor?

If yes, that's yer problem! The MIDDLE hole is the intake port shared by both cylinders. If you poured gas in the left port, you poured the gas in the left hand exhaust port.

I am not quite THAT bad!!!! Yes - tried some straight gas down the middle port - also checked for spark at each plug. Got a good strong blue flame.
compression even checks out as needed per spec sheet.

I would think this tractor would at least belch once or twice for me! I'm thinking it would really be nice to see a little flame from the exhaust side and even a bit of smoke!

Guess I'll have to leave it for now until I can get the carburetor and exhaust manifolds installed along with a rebuild on my carb.

Any other ideas????

You are lucky it didn't start! Without a carb on it you would have a run-away. In just a few pops the RPM's can get very high.

Thats what I have decided about this as well. I'll wait and try things when I get the manifold and carb back on.
