I have a John Deere H 1945 have a hard time starting by turning flywheel by hand, but will start very easily if I pull start it. Any ideas why?

A mag equipped tractor that is tough to start and yet with a chain will start with a 3 foot pull then run fine is often an indicator of weak spark.

Even a mag with a good impulse spring doesn't deliver quite hot enough spark to start if the points are not up to snuff and that includes proper point gap. Pulling it spins the mag so much faster, tired points become less an issue and may start right up & run fine!

Absolutely the first thing I'd do is replace the points. Remember also that proper point gap in a mag is more important than in a distributor!

I'm not saying it isn't the impulse spring which it could well be but I'd only go there if there was:

A. No impulse snap taking place
B. after installing new points or after a good filing, dressing and gapping of the existing points it still won't go.

Also, a tired coil can cause the same trouble but points won't fix it!

Hope that helps.

I have good snap from mag, timing is ok, I will check the point gap and replace the spark plug and try again. I should just covert it to electric start.

Mine had electric start and lights but there was no battery and the wiring didn't look to good when I brought it home. It was so easy to start with the homemade crank that I never bothered to get the electrics set up.

Have a 48 B that was miserable to start. Pulled the plugs and they looked fine. However I replaced them anyway
and now starts like new.
