sounding stupid

Reading Green Magazine last night I realized i was ignorant to yet another aspect of the John Deere tractor world.
What does it mean if a tractor is classified as a 20 series or 30 series, etc?
Arnie

The higher the series generally meant the newer the tractor....as in 50 series was newer than the 40 series which was newer than the 30 series and so on. Once the model designation series changes, it starts all over again...as in when the 4000 line of tractors which ran from 1960 to 1972 was superseded by the new generation series which were produced from 1972 to 1992, being replaced by the current 7000 line of tractors. There, that makes a simple answer very confusing. Sorry ! Ben

(quoted from post at 09:21:03 05/23/16) It must be the very first time you have read Green magazine if you have to ask that question?

I hear that Mr. Thinker is a knowledgeable and real nice guy to ask.
