Dimensions of John Deer sickle mower tractor mounts

Hello,

I recently purchased a John Deere No. 8 sickle mower.

I was wondering if someone on this list could give me measurements of the mount points from an actual John Deere tractor? I need to build mounts for my Minneapolis Moline.

If I could get measurements of distances from end of PTO shaft to the center of the cylindrical mount, and distance front-to-back from end of PTO to center of mounts, I would really appreciate it.

I have attached a picture I found of a No. 5 attached to a tractor ( think the No. 8 would use the same mount point?) I need to build the tractor-side of these two mount points, and I just need to know where to put them in relation to the PTO.

Sincerely,
Duane

I've owned several #8's and had them mounted on a variety of tractors and I don't think there's anything real critical about the fore and aft position.

The mowers were available with a variety of PTO shaft lengths depending upon the tractor they were intended to be mounted on, so the mounting point for yours might be different than for someone else's mower with a different optional driveshaft.

Bottom line is the frame of the #8 should be more or less level from front to back and the driveline should be extended maybe 3" or so from fully collapsed to allow it to move in and out as the mower and tractor go over varying terrain without "bottoming out" or extending too far with potentially disastrous results when the tail of the mower is lower than the tractor.

Left-to-right position will vary with the tractor's rear tread width and if it's a #8 or an 8W mower, so you don't have the right rear wheel running on uncut grass.

Do you have an Operator's Manual? Wonder if there's any more info there, I will take a look at mine.

Also, (if you don't have a hard copy at hand), below are links to the #5 and #8 parts catalogs in .pdf format at the official DEERE site.

Hi Bob,

Thanks much for the information, yes, I do have the parts manual already. It even has optional mounts for a variety of tractors, (including non-
Deere), but alas, no dimensions.

I know precisely how it is mounted isn't critical, but I thought if I could get a data point or two....

Sincerely,
Duane

Here are some pictures of my home made mount of a #5 on my 1950 JDA.

Hello,

I am looking to mount this on an MM 335 Utility, but it would be nice if I could make the mount configurable to be able to use it on my 445 Utility as well.

I believe I have seen pictures of the brackets available from JD for other makes of tractors back then. There was one for the 445s that was a plate with the two ends for the JD mower on it. I think it bolted under the drawbar support. I will have to see if I can find them. You can send me an email if you like.

Here is a picture of the bracket I was talking about. I dont think it would be to hard to make it fit a 335. It should give you some of a reference point of where it mounts in relation to the mower to get an idea for the length of the pto shaft.
