John Deere 730D transmission (2nd over reverse)sometimes locks up when trying to shift from one side to the other. It's always in neutral when it locks up. The shift handle doesn't come back far enough to cross over. It doesn't happen every time but when it does I have to take the top off the trans to line it back up. any suggestions?

We have fixed several of these, the rails get worn where the shift lever contacts the rail. I have had success welding them up in the tractor with a wire feed welder. Make sure to cover the area to minimize contamination in the transmission. Then use a bolt same size as the ball on the lever as a gauge and die grind the rail to get a nice fit. I also use a shop vac when die grinding to keep it clean. Next inspect the interlock underside for wear. Look where the shift lever raises the interlock to slide from high to low. I find a little extra build up here works well for gaining spring tension on shift lever when pulled down to the lower quadrant. I have also welded them up during transmission rebuilds which is easier welding but a lot more work with disassemble and reassemble time. You do get a chance to see your transmission more thoroughly, trust me there is a good chance you will find a bad bearing or two or four. If you decide to rebuild trans learn how to adjust rails before you assemble. good luck
