John deere 70 diesel

I just purchased a John Deere 70 diesel and have noticed it is dripping what looks like black oil out of the exhaust. It starts good and runs good and I have no history on it. Am I looking at a overhaul or maybe some dirty injectors.

Worn cylinder bores and piston rings. Work it hard and it will clear up, but soon return during idle/low rpm operations.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm not sure what oil is in it but was going to run 15 40 Rotellain it. Temp gauge needs replaced it doesn't work. I am thinking of removing the injectors and doing a compression test. I hate to have to overhaul it.

hello,,if you are running light load or piddling around, it probably is raw unburned fuel slobber. if you put her to work, does this clear up? if so, the black oil looking stuff is raw fuel mixed with a little soot in the exhaust, making a BLACK STICKY OILY looking substance.

Hello, I am just running it around and not working her. Trying to get things checked out and cleaned up, she needs ea little work but is in pretty good shape. I may just have the fuel system gone thru and check compression in the cylinders and see what I have. Thank you for the info.

Thanks for all the info everyone got the problem fixed had way to much oil in the crank case took a halfa gallon out of it and ran her today and no messy slop out of the exhaust.
