If someone has a model L would you measure from the bottom of the front axle to the bottom of the spindle and then email me. Thanks. I want to make sure my L is a high clearance or not. I've been given conflicting measurements.

Mine Hi Clearance is 10.5' from bottom of the axle to the bottom of the spindle. Approximately 15.5' from the top of the spindle to the bottom of the spindle.

Bman I found on e pic from the last post! You have a lot going on with that L
Does it have a serial tag? From that Pic i'm 95% sure its NOT a high clear axel! It looks like a late 1945 or 46 LA adjustable axle Also it has offset front wheels and looks like you may have 24 inch rear tires and rims??? Couple more pics would help! Chris

BMAN:
I just went out top the barn and measured my John Deere Model L/Hercules Engine. All original with actual s/n in the 634---- range. The distance you are asking about is exactly 9 inches from bottom of axle to bottom of spindle(both sides the same). The front axle on my machines is non adjustable, fixed.

Closer view of your front end reveals that it has the adjustable front axle. At the time of purchase or later the adjustable front axle was available from the dealer for these machines. The same was true for the Model LA. For 38,40,43,48 and 52 inch front wheel treads an adjustable front axle is/was available. This is taken from the spec sheet for models L and LA. My spec sheet book was published in Sept 1941.
Looking at your "propeller shaft cover" which is narrow your machine never had the shaft bolted together pulley to drive the JD No. 7 integral mower.

You got a hybrid, looks like a L with LA wheels, I can't see the back of the frame to see if it's hollow or solid?
