730 Diesel cold start

I bout a 730 diesel about a month or two ago. It has electric start. A couple days after I got it home we had a nightime low of about 25 degrees. That morning it had to turn over about 10 or 15 times before it finaly started, no ether or anything. Any other time it will start in half a turn or so.

Does this sound normal or is the compression a little low? I am only wondering because I have seen a few youtube videos where it is supposedly 25 degrees out and the 730 diesel starts in just a couple turns.

Don't be too quick to judge it...if it will idle slow or starts well when warm, it has plenty compression..

DO warm it up watching the oil pressure, so it does not go too high (cold)..

Don't hit it with Ether unless ya KNOW what you are doing..that is one engine you don't want to damage unnecessarily ..!!

Ron..

Thanks what do you mean by warm it up watching the oil pressure so it does not go too high? It is pretty high when cold. It does idle nicely though.

And no, I was not planning to use ether. I think can always just plug it in.

Are you following the step by step procedure in the operator's manual.
Get rid of that can of ether before something gets ruined.

I do not own a can of ether, and I do not plan to. I was just trying to give all the info. I know that ether is bad for engines. Can you give me the reasons?

Please explain what you mean by "DO warm it up watching the oil pressure, so it does not go too high (cold).." What could possibly go wrong with a "too high oil pressure"? Also define what too high an oil pressure really is.

I was wondering that too. The manual says too high oil pressure setting can cause oil to leak into the first reduction gear housing. Is that what you were refering to?
