This is called for in the hydraulics of my JD717A zero-turn mower by the owner's manual. It is called a synthetic blend, and I have not found any within 40 miles of my
place. Is Rotella 15w40 comparable? The manual calls for an SG rating, and Rotella has SM.

I think I would go to a John Deere dealer and get some input there. I don't have one of these mowers, but I do have a few JD brand pieces of equipment. I do have a 425 John Deere Lawn and Garden tractor, which I use for mowing my lawn. My dealer recommended I use Low-Viscosity Hy-Guard in the hydrostatic drive for that tractor. I cannot recall what the original specified oil was for that machine. We do have a combine that did allow the use of 10W non-detergent motor oil for the hydrostatic and hydraulic system. When the charge pump went bad, it was recommended we switch to a transmission and hydraulic oil, such as Hy-Guard. It was noted that 10W engine oil was okay, but the true Hy-Guard was made for that specific use.
