709 slip clutch

Does anyone know how tight the nut on a 709 mower slip clutch should be? Also do the bellville washers face each other or do you just stack them?

Bellville washers stack together similar to stacking dinner plates. I don't remember ever seeing a spec just tight enough not to slip when cutting but loose enough to slip when an obstruction is encountered.

In addition to Jim's good information, the best way to set the clutch is to loosen it first and spin the clutch to clean it of rust. Do this once a year. After the clutch has been cleaned up tighten it a little at a time. To check to see if it is adjusted correctly take a chalk or soapstone and make a mark across all of the clutch disks and parts. When properly adjusted the marks will be slightly "off" from one another after running the cutter. The marks should not still be matching, nor should they be off a long way. Hope this helps. Mike
