John Deere 2840

Hi,
I am thinking on buying a John Deere 2840 with a cab and 148 front loader. It has 9000 hrs.on it. Is 9000 hrs a lot hours for a tractor? Any other opinions on this model? I am moving up from a Ford 640 series. Thanks

I have not owned a 2840 so this is second hand information. The 2840 is one of those thrctors some people love and others hate.
The transmission and/or rear end are the weak points. Some dealers would not even sell one with a loader.
I suggest you only look at it seriously if you know the previous owner and could discuss the history.
It also depends on how you plan to use the tractor. Fine if you do a lot of PTO work, etc. Otherwise you might want to think about a 2940.

I've got a 2840 i'm thinking of selling. It has a cab and 1005 hours. It came from the local park district and was only used to mow.I have a chance to buy a 6410 from a neighbor who is retiring.

2840's were very hard to start when I sold them when they were BRAND NEW after they reached operating temp because of hyd problems. I would never buy a used 2840.

2840's are similar to 2010's

"Can't tear up a good one and can't repair a bad one"

All I know is some of them failed miserably while still in warranty when I worked for a JD dealer. I sold one of them new that the pto clutch snap ring came out of it's slot and ruined the trans case. The trans case took weeks to get here from Germany.

If you like your 2840 that's great but I don't want one.

The 2840s werent that great.I think the 6410 or 6420MFD would be a much better but more expensive choice. The 6410 had a problem with fire if not properly operated, had something to do with trash and hydraulic lines[not sure].We had a 6420 MFD that worked fine for its size.A good 2840 sold with loader 3500 hrs and brought $7500 so that tells you something when a 4020 with 9200hrs. brought 10K.A 6420 with 6K hrs will still bring 30K.

The 2950 is like a younger sister,,just as ugly.....but newer...look at late 4020's or 4230's you will be better off,,I Love Deeres but the older utilities were not near as good as the Waterlou modles.

Like two different worlds, I have often wondered how things would be if Deere would have given Waterlou the industrial side...

Folk either like Dubuque/Mannheim tractor or they don't. They always worked well enough for us.
Clean trans oil, filter and screen. Plus a ported filter cover for high flow hydraulic loads and they are good.
Operators that let the divert valves chatter from lack of maintenance deserve all the troubles they have.

That 20 minutes of book time you were referring to on the 3020 24V thread you need to do because you favor JD Dubuque/Mannheim hyd systems over Waterloo tractors. I'll assure you that Waterloo tractors are way out in front of the utility tractors with LESS HYD PROBLEMS,NO COMPARISON. IMHO it's not diverting valves chattering on a utility but the frt hyd pump &/or stroke control valve. Yes clean hyd oil/filter & screen is a must on either factory tractor. Nothing goes further than good maintenance.

I don't favour the Dubuque/Mannheim hydraulic
systems, they are less capable and more susceptible
to abuse.
They can however be made to work ok but require
more TLC than a Waterloo.

I have a 3130 '79' model and have a lot of questions about the hydraulics. very similar to 2840, have just rebuilt the steering unit and have similar issues with 3 point linkage being jerky especially at lower rpm's. Does the high pressure line that feeds power steering, feed the 3 point lift (rockshaft) and the remotes through the "priority valve" on side of transmission case? Or is the rockshaft fed from the low pressure supply pump?

Welcome to YT.
Yes you're correct rockshaft is supplied via the pressure control valve by an oil galley in trans case

Hi, thanks for replying to my previous question. In regards to the statement above about the "ported filter cover for high flow hydraulic loads and they are good" what does that mean? what constitutes a high flow hyd. load? my 3130 had a hydraulic line coming out of that port going to the back of the tractor when I bought it. Didn't know much about it so I took it off and plugged it per the JDparts drawing. is a high flow hyd. load like a round baler tailgate opening? I know on mine the rear remotes struggle when the rpms are down and I try to raise the tailgate on the round baler.
