1952 John Deere A Steering Box Adjustment

Seeking advice from those with more experience than I. The steering box on my 1952 John Deere A has about a 1/2 turn of steering slop to it and when I pulled it onto the road last weekend, well, I don't want to do that again. I've seen reference to a steering box rebuild guide? Any information or advice as to how to rebuild this component on the tractor?

The sector gear on the vertical shaft is nice and tight, has a good fit on the splines. I put a new bearing in on the outboard bearing but when the cover is tightened down, with no shims, the bearing is not tight. I think that is the source of my issue but I am not seeing how I can make it any tighter on the inboard bearing side. I have that tightened down the best I can.

So, death-wobble adjustments? TIA!

When you turn the steering wheel does the whole shaft move front to back? There are two tapered roller bearings on either end of the worm gear. One or both could be gone. That would be why they will not tighten up.

Exactly. The vertical steering is nice and tight but the shaft will spin front and back about 1/2 turn before catching. I replaced both bearings (which made it better; it was worse). I can wiggle the bearing that goes in the front cap, its not sealing in at all. I assume its something related to the inner bearing maybe not seating in properly allowing this movement.

Sounds like it is time to get some shim Washers and take the slack out....NAPA will have about any size you need..take a bearing in with you...
