Where to start?

I will try to make long story short. I have a 43 B I bought as a project (aren't they all) Mag was weak so I replaced with a new one from Steiners that I acquired prior through a little bartering. It's a hand start and it starts, but not easy. Once warm, it doesn't really want to start at all. I understand timing could be the issue, but the carb looks pretty crusty too. Being new to me, I don't know exactly what I have....I like to do one thing at a time to narrow down problems and then move on to the next, but this has several I think. Do I rebuild carb and set to factory settings and mess with timing and carb at same time, or ?????? Where would you begin? Look forward to hearing advice and wisdom from someone more experienced than myself. Thank you.

Probably be a good idea to at least eliminate the carb since it more than likely needs rebuilt anyway. May be your only problem. Won't know until you eliminate it as a possibility. I can do it for you. My e-mail is open.

Have you rechecked the valve tappet clearance? Book says .020 warm, I normally go .023 cold. (better a smidgen loose than too tight) If you need the magneto timing procedure from the book let us know, I am awful busy this week, but I'll try to get it on later in the week.

I figured out a while back that posts which include the names of certain (or maybe all) competitors of this site don't show in Modern View.
