99 JD 4500 PTO

I am posting this for a friend who has a 1999 John Deere 4500 4wd. Last fall while using the tiller his power takeoff quit working, while racing darkness to plant a cover crop on his garden, and he found a blown fuse. Replaced it but it immediately blew again. He was basically done with tilling so he parked the tractor. This Spring he found some wires going to the pto selinoid had been hot and the insulation was in poor condition. He realizes that he should have addressed that before proceeding but he didn't and the unit worked for a minute then went out. Things were hot when he inspected them and he figured he had fried the selinoid so he contacted the local Dealer and wound up with new selinoid which he installed. It too ran for just a minute or two and shut down. He says he can hear selinoid seeming to engage when he turns pto on but it gets warm to the touch. Seems like a short somewhere to me. I suggested, to start with he unhook the selinoid and check his power supply from there coming through switch to make sure that his power supply was ok. I have not looked at tractor and not familiar with this type of set up to be much help if I did but I know from past experience that folks on this forum know their tractors so I thought you all might have some advice for him. I am going to try and get him on this site but , in the meantime, thought I would post this for him. Any advice will be appreciated and thanks in advance. Sorry for the long post. Pipestem
