John Deere L

I just bought a model L. I believe it is a 1939. Of course the serial tag is missing. But it has the Hercules engine and the top shift transmission. Can someone tell me or show me a picture of where the handcrank is supposed to be stored when not used. I'm not sure there is a special place. I just thought maybe there would be a mounting place. It's pretty much a barn find in original condition so I thought if there were any mounting brackets for storing the crank they would be there.

I lay mine on the step by the clutch. If you play around with it you will find that it stays there just fine.
 

I have my Grandfather's 1940 Model L; he always stored the starting crank inside the engine house, under the magneto. The Model L No. 101 T Instructions and parts list shows this location as well. This location doesn't work very well if the tractor is equipped with an oil pressure gauge.

I have the very same tractor and mine is stored on the right side under the carb and governor housing. For an improvement in performance and was often done get a rebuilt WICO Model X from John Brillman(The Brillman Co.) he is in Virginia. I have two one on and one as a spare.
 
This is another example of how Deere was cutting costs when they styled the Model L, as the unstyled L had a great starting crank storage location fabricated on the driveshaft cover...
 
I set mine on the LA's between the left fender and the steering post and against the foot rest. I think you turn it upside down and it hangs right there.
 
By the clutch pedal and steering post is where I have been putting it. I guess it's a convenient spot. I don't want to mess up the paint when I get to painting it.

The problem for me is that my tractor has an L12 cultivator and the rear to front rig lifting arm is located between the fender and the steering support arm so I can't store the crank there. On the right side I have the lifting arm lever for the cultivator, so I'm forced to use the engine house. I have a cloth cover that I slip over the crank so it helps prevent scratching.
