I have a JD 4020 diesel that need the engine freshen up. I have been getting an overhaul kit that had pistons that where a little higher in compression than the OEM JD kits. They really make the 404 start better in cooler weather. The supplier I got them through can not get the kits anymore. They where US made parts and the company is out of business.

Do any of you know of or recommend a overhaul kit.

PS I know this site sells overhaul kits but they are NOT higher compression pistons and the Tisco stuff is mostly imported.

Had good luck with John Deere engine kits tractor will start if the batteries aren't froze dead sometimes have to hook the battery Charger on over night to bring some life back to it but it'll start I never use ether on it

A fairly local heavy engine machine shop (Syracuse Crank) has offered parts through a website called "agkits". That would be my first choice. Might be worth a call. I wish I had tried something different years ago when I overhauled my old 4020. It still starts and runs great. But doesn't have much pep.

Hy Capacity offers an increased performance kit that is what you are looking for. Made by Reliance and labeled as 'Hyper-Formance'. That is the only kit I use and customers have been very satisfied with the results. They also offer it for 30 series which really improves starting on a 4430.

I have an account with these guys

I have had two tractors overhauled with their kits. First was my 6030 and last one was a 68 4020. I know on the 4020 kits, they offer a hyper performance version that is 1.25 points higher compression than a standard kit and that is what I used on the 4020 motor. The 4020 crank had been ground previously, which I didn't know till after I bought the kit. I pulled the bearing kit out and sent it to them and they swapped it for undersized bearings no questions asked.

I like the Reliance kits as well. Did my 4230 two years ago and have a late 4020 in the shop getting one now and an early 4020 coming in a month from now. I have started putting new head bolts in as well when doing a 4020. Tom

I use to use Deere kits, but do to the attitude of the Mega Dealer and the much higher price I now use only Reliance kits..I do not know who makes the kits for Deere, but I am sure it is not Deere..

Endurancepower.com. Lincoln NE. Get the hyper-kit. My 4020 starts right up at 20 degrees. Have put several of the kits in. My son did a 69 3020 last yr for his senior project. Used that kit also. Starts great in the cold also

I have overhauled a lot of Deere engines including several 4010-20's and used mostly Deere kits. High priced for sure but no quality issues. Used one reliance kit on a 466 engine and never used one again. I just was not impressed with the quality. I know of two reliance kitted 8.1 L engines that lost the top of a piston around 1,000 hours. Seeing that carnage first hand made up my mind!! Although in a 100 HP engine they are probably just fine.

If you compare the parts in the kit the Deere looks better bigger snap rings for the piston pins was one thing I remember it's been 15 years but we had a my tractor and a school project tractor I used Deere the school chose of course the cheapest thing they could find, I will challenge anybody's engine kit to a cold weather starting dual no ether allowed no block heaters Battery charger and fuel additive only things you can use

Comparing the spec's of parts JD sold 15 yrs ago to parts that they sell today is very similar to comparing apples to oranges.

I do no think Reliance kits are cheap.
They are making kits for big Cat engine with 2 pieces pistons. The very cheap companies do not offer them... Those pistons are going up and down very fast, too... I have seen small shops installing only Reliance kits.

The Reliance kits come with rod pins, snap rings and rod bolts... the Deere kits don't..
